Texas Hold em Poker - How to Play

Texas Hold'em is a  popular poker variation. It can be found at a South African Online Casino or other online casinos worldwide. Additionally, it can be learned quickly.

The players are dealt two 'hole cards that only they can see and use. There are then five 'community cards dealt in the middle of the table that everyone can see and use. As long as each player has both of their hole cards or only one of them, the five-card hand can be made.

Betting Rounds

There are four rounds of betting, and the game is played clockwise around the table. Betting starts
at the player position next to the dealer button, which moves one position to the left after every hand.
A dealer button replaces the 'real' dealer in online games.

If two or more players have the same strong five-card hands and tie, the pot will be split between them. Whenever an odd chip remains after winnings, it will go to the player closest to the left of the dealer button.

The Blinds

Players on the left of the dealer place blind bets before the game starts. Blind bets are called that because they are placed before the players have seen the cards. The blinds are to ensure that there is some money in the pot to play for as the game starts. The player positioned to the left of the dealer posts the 'small blind', and the player positioned to his left posts the 'big blind'.

Pre Flop Action

Two cards are dealt face down to each player. They are called pocket cards or hole cards. The action begins with the player to the left of the big blind. The player has three options: either call the bet, raise the bet, or fold.

Call

Make the big blind bet equal to the amount wagered.

Raise

Increasing the amount bet.

Fold

Give up your cards and stake.

Betting continues clockwise around the table until each player has had a chance to act on their hand.
Players who wish to retain their position in the pot must either match the raise amount or re-raise it or fold if they do not wish to remain in the pot.
The player in the big blind (the first compulsory entire bet) can 'check' and stay in the game without adding to the pot. If an opponent raises, the big blind has three options: fold, call or re-raise.
Upon all the players folding or matching each others' bets, the flop is dealt.

The Flop

Three cards are dealt face up at this stage. Using these cards, players can make five-card hands. The second round of betting follows.

The Turn

There is one face-up community card on the table. The third round of betting follows.

The River

A fifth community card is dealt ( the final card ), followed by the final betting round.

The Showdown

There is a showdown if one player remains in the game, in which the highest hand wins. Pots are split when two players hold identical hands.
